  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 large can whole tomatoes
  • 1 medium can tomato sauce
  • 3 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1 to 2 tsp. cumin
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Remove sausage from casing and crumble meat into a frying pan. Discard casings.

  3. In the same frying pan, add a little oil if needed and cook chopped onion, green pepper, and mushrooms until just tender.
  4. Cut the whole tomatoes into large chunks and add them to the vegetable mixture, reserving some liquid from the can.
  5. Add the cooked sausage to the mixture along with spices: oregano and cumin if desired, and pepper to taste.
  6. Simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes.
  7. Add the tomato sauce and simmer a little longer.
  8. Serve the dip with chips or crackers.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier dip, consider adding cream cheese or sour cream. If you want to lighten the dish, use turkey sausage instead of Italian sausage. Fresh mushrooms are great, but canned work well too. Adjust the cumin to your taste; it adds a warm flavor, but you can reduce it for a milder dip. This Italian Sausage Dip is also perfect for pairing with a Sausage And Pepper Sandwich.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this delicious dip with tortilla chips or crackers for a perfect appetizer. It can also be enjoyed as a topping for baked potatoes or stuffed into bell peppers. Pair it with a fresh salad or vegetable platter for a balanced meal. This dip is versatile enough to complement Italian recipes, making it a great addition to any gathering.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, warm the dip in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally until heated through. You can also microwave it in short intervals, stirring in between, to ensure even heating. Avoid reheating multiple times to maintain the best flavor and texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dip a day in advance. Just follow the recipe up to the simmering step, then let it cool before storing it in the refrigerator. When you're ready to serve, reheat gently on the stove and serve warm for the best flavor.

What can I use instead of Italian sausage?

You can substitute Italian sausage with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option. For a vegetarian version, use plant-based sausage alternatives or sautéed lentils seasoned with Italian spices. Both options will provide a different flavor profile but will still make a tasty dip.

How can I make this dip spicier?

To add some heat, consider incorporating diced jalapeños or red pepper flakes along with the spices. You can also use spicy Italian sausage instead of mild for an extra kick. Start with a small amount and adjust to your taste as it simmers.
