Ingredients

  • 2 cakes yeast
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup currants
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup candied cherries
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/2 cup citron
  • flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water.
  2. Pour scalded milk over the butter. Add yeast, sugar, 1/2 of the flour, and salt. Beat well for 10 minutes.
  3. Add beaten eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
  4. Add the remaining flour along with currants, raisins, candied cherries, citron, and cardamom.
  5. Knead the dough and place it in a greased bowl to rise.
  6. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  7. Knead the dough again and let it rise until doubled.
  8. Shape into loaves and place into greased pans.
  9. Brush the tops with egg whites and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes.
  10. Brush the crust with melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon after baking.
