Kerosene Pickles are tangy, spicy homemade pickles featuring cucumbers, dill, hot peppers, and garlic, perfect for adding flavor to sandwiches or as a condiment.

Ingredients

  • cucumbers
  • 1 bunch dill
  • 6 hot peppers
  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 6 slices onion
  • 6 teaspoons whole spices
  • 6 lumps alum
  • 1 quart cider vinegar
  • 2 quarts water
  • 1 cup salt

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry enough cucumbers for six sterilized one-quart jars.
  2. In the bottom of each jar, place a portion of dill, 1 hot pepper, 1 clove of garlic, 1 slice of onion, 1 teaspoon of whole spices, a small lump of alum, and cucumbers.
  3. In a saucepan, combine the cider vinegar, water, and salt.
  4. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
  5. Pour the hot vinegar mixture into the jars over the cucumbers and other ingredients.
  6. Seal the jars immediately.
