Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 teaspoons soda

Instructions

  1. Mix hot water and soda together and set aside.
  2. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Add vanilla and salt, mix well.
  5. Alternately add flour and remaining ingredients, beating until smooth.
  6. Slowly pour in the hot water mixture, beating on low speed until combined.
  7. Pour batter into a greased 9x13 inch pan or three 9-inch layer pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
