Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 8 ounces dried red lentils
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Hot cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add onion, garlic, and ginger. Saute until golden. Stir in turmeric and lentils; cook, stirring occasionally, 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Stir in broth, and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes. Stir in salt and garam masala; cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes or until lentils are tender and mixture is thickened. Serve with hot cooked rice.
