Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter or Crisco shortening
  • 1 cup mild molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening and sugar together.
  2. Add the beaten egg, molasses, and sifted dry ingredients (flour, soda, ginger, salt, cinnamon, cloves).
  3. Add hot water and beat until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Pour into a greased shallow pan and bake in a 325° to 350°F oven for 35 minutes.
