Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 beaten eggs
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in warm water.
  2. Scald milk and stir in sugar, butter, and salt.
  3. Cool the mixture to lukewarm temperature.
  4. Stir beaten eggs and yeast into the milk mixture, then beat in 2 cups of flour.
  5. Knead in enough remaining flour to make a smooth, easy-to-handle dough.
  6. Cover and let rise for 1 1/2 hours.
  7. Punch the dough down, cover, and let rest for 10 minutes.
  8. Divide dough in half and shape each into a round loaf.
  9. Place on a greased baking sheet.
  10. Cover and let rise until doubled in size.
  11. Brush the loaves with beaten egg yolk.
  12. Bake at 350°F for 35 to 40 minutes.
