Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 5 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon shortening

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare the baking pan as needed.
  2. Beat butter and 1/2 cup shortening at medium speed with an electric mixer about 2 minutes or until creamy.
  3. Gradually add sugar, beating at medium speed 5 to 7 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating just until yellow disappears after each addition.
  5. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix at low speed just until blended after each addition.
  6. Stir in vanilla.
  7. Melt the unsweetened chocolate and 1 tablespoon shortening to prepare the chocolate swirl.
  8. Drop spoonfuls of the chocolate mixture into the batter and swirl with a knife to create a marbled effect.
  9. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  10. Bake at the specified temperature until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Cool the cake in the pan for a few minutes, then remove and cool completely before serving.
