Ingredients

  • nonstick spray coating
  • 1 lb. lean ground turkey or chicken
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped
  • 2 (15 oz.) cans low sodium tomato sauce
  • 2 (4 1/2 oz.) jars sliced mushrooms, drained
  • 1 (6 oz.) can Italian tomato paste
  • 2 tsp. dried Italian seasoning
  • 2 tsp. fennel seed
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. ground red pepper
  • 12 oz. spaghetti

Instructions

  1. Spray a 3-quart saucepan with nonstick coating.
  2. Add ground turkey or chicken, chopped onion, and chopped green pepper to the pan.
  3. Cook and stir over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender.
  4. Drain excess liquid from the pan.
  5. Stir in tomato sauce, drained mushrooms, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, fennel seed, sugar, garlic salt, black pepper, and red pepper if desired.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  7. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
