Ingredients

  • 3 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons brandy
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup chopped dried apples
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Place bread crumbs in a pan.
  3. Dot with 1/4 cup of the softened butter.
  4. Bake, uncovered, stirring occasionally until golden brown, about 20 minutes.
  5. Cool the bread crumbs.
  6. In a saucepan, heat brown sugar, water, brandy, cinnamon, and cloves over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved.
  7. Place 1 cup of the bread crumbs in an ungreased round pan (9 x 1 1/2-inch).
  8. Pour 1/3 cup of the syrup over the crumbs and sprinkle with cheese.
  9. Top with 1 cup of bread crumbs, then sprinkle with chopped dried apples, raisins, and chopped walnuts.
  10. Pour another 1/3 cup of syrup over the layers and top with remaining bread crumbs.
  11. Pour the remaining syrup over the top, dot with the remaining softened butter.
  12. Bake uncovered in the 300°F oven until hot and bubbly, about 30 minutes.
  13. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
  14. Garnish with sweetened whipped cream, if desired.
