Ingredients

  • 3/4 C sugar
  • 1/3 C flour
  • 2 C milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1 9-inch baked pie shell

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar, flour, and salt in a saucepan. Stir in milk gradually and cook over medium heat until bubbly, about 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  2. Remove from heat. Stir the hot mixture into slightly beaten egg yolks. Cook for 2 minutes longer, then add butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla, mixing well.
  3. Pour the custard filling into the baked pie shell and let it cool before serving.
