Ingredients

  • 16 oz. dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces
  • 2 tablespoons strong instant coffee
  • 1 tablespoon hot water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • frosting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the brown sugar and butter in a medium-size saucepan over medium-low heat until the butter has melted.
  2. Dissolve the coffee in hot water and stir into the butter mixture.
  3. Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Butter an 8 x 11-inch baking pan.
  6. When the butter mixture is cool, beat in the eggs and vanilla.
  7. Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together.
  8. Stir into the butter mixture with a wooden spoon.
  9. Stir in the chopped walnuts and semi-sweet chocolate pieces.
  10. Spread evenly in the prepared pan with a rubber spatula.
  11. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until light brown.
  12. Cool and cut into bars. Frost and sprinkle with nuts, if desired.
