Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Dissolve cocoa in boiling water and mix hot coffee with soda.
  2. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add all but baking powder and flour to the creamed mixture.
  4. Mix baking powder with flour and gradually add to the creamed mixture, beating until the flour disappears.
  5. Pour batter into a greased 13 x 9-inch pan or two round pans.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cake completely and dust with powdered sugar or frost with your favorite frosting.
