Molasses Date Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup shortening, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sifted enriched flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 (7 ounce) package pitted dates, chopped fine

Instructions

  1. Beat egg, add sugar, molasses, shortening and vanilla. Stir in sifted dry ingredients, nuts and dates. Pour into 9-inch square pan lined with waxed paper, greased and lightly floured. Baked at 350F for 40 minutes. Cut into 32 bars when cool, then roll in confectioners' sugar.
