Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 5 Tbsp. water
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 5 c. all-purpose flour
  • 5 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. soda

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water and set aside.
  2. Sift together flour, soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add shortening to the dry ingredients and blend with a pastry blender until crumbly.
  4. Combine the yeast mixture with the buttermilk and add to the dry ingredients.
  5. Mix everything together until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll out to desired thickness.
  7. Cut into biscuits and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake at 400° to 425°F for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
