Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups cut-up dates
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 square unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/3 cup softened butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup quick cooking oats
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Grease an 8x8 or 9x9-inch square baking pan.
  3. Cook dates, granulated sugar, water, and chocolate over low heat, stirring constantly for about 10 minutes until mixture thickens.
  4. Allow the date mixture to cool.
  5. Cream together softened butter and brown sugar.
  6. Mix in the remaining ingredients: flour, salt, baking soda, oats, and chopped nuts.
  7. Press half of the crumble mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  8. Spread the cooled date mixture over the base.
  9. Top with the remaining crumble mixture, pressing lightly.
  10. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Cool completely before cutting into bars.
