Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 1/2 cup grape juice
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup candied cherries
  • 1/2 cup candied orange peel
  • 1/3 cup citron
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and eggs; add grape juice.
  2. Beat for 3 minutes, then add the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Divide the batter into 3 greased pans.
  4. Bake for 1 1/2 hours at 300°F (150°C).
  5. Remove from pans and pour Mogan David grape wine over the breads.
  6. Cool and wrap in wax paper, then foil. Store in a tightly sealed can.
  7. If the bread gets dry, coat with more wine before serving.
