Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 6 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Sift flour, sugar, cocoa, and baking soda into an ungreased 8 x 8 x 2-inch baking pan.
  3. Make three holes in the mixture and pour vegetable oil into the first hole, vinegar into the second hole, and vanilla into the third hole.
  4. Beat egg with water in a small bowl and pour over the dry ingredients.
  5. Add walnuts if using.
  6. Stir with a fork until evenly blended.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes or until the center springs back when lightly touched with fingertips.
  8. Cool in pan on wire rack.
