Tips & Substitutions

For best results, make sure your water is warm but not too hot, around 110°F, to activate the yeast without killing it. If you don't have shortening, you can substitute with an equal amount of unsalted butter. This dough can be made ahead of time and refrigerated up to 24 hours before shaping and baking, allowing for a deeper flavor development.

Serving Suggestions

These knot rolls are perfect for serving alongside soups, stews, or salads. They pair beautifully with Our Favorite Strawberry Pie for a delightful meal. Consider brushing them with garlic butter after baking for extra flavor, or enjoying them with a spread of honey or jam for breakfast.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover knot rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 5-10 minutes until warmed through and soft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant yeast instead of active dry yeast?

Yes, you can substitute instant yeast for active dry yeast at a 1:1 ratio. The main difference is that instant yeast doesn't need to be dissolved in warm water beforehand, so you can mix it directly with the dry ingredients for a quicker prep time.

How can I ensure my rolls are light and fluffy?

To achieve light and fluffy rolls, make sure not to overwork the dough after adding the remaining flour. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, which is crucial for achieving that airy texture. Also, avoid overbaking, as this can dry them out.

What if I want to add herbs or spices to the dough?

Adding herbs or spices can enhance the flavor of your knot rolls. Consider mixing in dried herbs like rosemary or thyme into the flour. You can also add garlic powder or onion powder for a savory twist. Just keep in mind to balance the flavors so they complement the rolls.
