Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon mace
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup quick cooking rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped nuts
  • 1 cup chocolate bits

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar, shortening, egg, and vanilla thoroughly.
  2. Add mace and salt to the flour.
  3. Stir to blend.
  4. Add blended dry ingredients, rolled oats, and nuts to the creamed mixture.
  5. Mix well; let stand for 10 minutes.
  6. Shape dough into 3/4-inch balls.
  7. Place on ungreased baking sheet.
  8. Press down in the center with your finger.
  9. Bake at 375°F for 5 minutes.
  10. Remove from oven.
  11. Press down in the center again.
  12. Return to oven and bake 5 to 7 minutes more.
  13. Melt chocolate bits in top of double boiler.
  14. Fill the center of each cookie with 1/4 teaspoon of melted chocolate.
