- Mix 1 1/2 cups of the flour, salt, honey, margarine and yeast in a large bowl.
- Add the very warm water.
- Beat by hand for two minutes.
- Beat in the egg.
- Gradually stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough is easy to handle.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
- Knead about 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
- Place in a greased bowl and turn greased side up.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Grease the bottom and sides of a pie plate with shortening.
- Punch down the dough.
- Shape the dough into a ball.
- Place in the pie plate and flatten slightly.
- Mix the egg white and water; brush on top of the loaf.
- Sprinkle with oats.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place for 45 to 60 minutes or until doubled.
- Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake about 35 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped and is golden brown.
- Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack.
