Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose or bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons margarine or butter, softened
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 cup very warm water (120 to 130 degrees)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Mix 1 1/2 cups of the flour, salt, honey, margarine and yeast in a large bowl.
  2. Add the very warm water.
  3. Beat by hand for two minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg.
  5. Gradually stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough is easy to handle.
  6. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  7. Knead about 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
  8. Place in a greased bowl and turn greased side up.
  9. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  10. Grease the bottom and sides of a pie plate with shortening.
  11. Punch down the dough.
  12. Shape the dough into a ball.
  13. Place in the pie plate and flatten slightly.
  14. Mix the egg white and water; brush on top of the loaf.
  15. Sprinkle with oats.
  16. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 45 to 60 minutes or until doubled.
  17. Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  18. Bake about 35 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped and is golden brown.
  19. Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack.
