Ingredients

  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange rind
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup chopped dates, floured
  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Mix the soda into the buttermilk and set aside.
  2. Stir Crisco and sugar together until well combined.
  3. Add eggs and grated orange rind to the creamed mixture and mix well.
  4. Alternate adding the flour and buttermilk mixture to the egg mixture, beginning and ending with the flour.
  5. Stir in the floured chopped dates and chopped pecans.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 50 minutes.
