Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 12 slices white bread, crust removed
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine brown sugar, light corn syrup, and 1/4 cup butter in a saucepan and stir over medium-low heat until sugar dissolves.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  3. Pour the caramel mixture into a 9 x 13-inch pan and coat the bottom evenly.
  4. Arrange 6 slices of bread in a single layer on top of the caramel layer, trimming bread to fit as needed.
  5. Cover with the remaining bread slices.
  6. Whisk together the remaining butter, milk, eggs, vanilla, and salt, then pour over the layered bread.
  7. Cover and chill the assembled dish overnight.
  8. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 40 minutes or until bread is puffed and light golden brown.
  9. Let stand for 5 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
  10. Garnish with fruit before serving.
