Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • pinch of salt
  • pepper
  • 1/2 pound sausage (small patties)
  • 1/2 pound hamburger (small patties)
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 to 6 carrots, sliced
  • 1 turnip or rutabaga, sliced
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • butter

Instructions

  1. Mix together flour, salt, and shortening in a bowl.
  2. Add milk gradually by teaspoon and mix until the mixture forms a ball.
  3. Divide the dough into 4 to 6 equal portions and roll each into a ball.
  4. On a floured surface, roll each ball into a square shape to make individual pies.
  5. Place each square onto a cookie sheet.
  6. Layer sliced turnips or rutabagas, sausage patties, sliced onion, hamburger patties, and sliced carrots onto the dough squares.
  7. Dot with butter and sprinkle with pepper.
  8. Wrap the dough around the filling, pinch the corners to seal.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes to one hour until golden.
