  • 1 qt. tomato juice
  • 3 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp. dry mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 3/4 tsp. ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 5 bay leaves
  • dash of hot sauce
  • pinch of red pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, onions, and garlic in a large Dutch oven. Cook until beef is browned, stirring to crumble meat.
  2. Drain off pan drippings.
  3. Add tomato paste, tomato juice, chili powder, dry mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, cumin, salt, pepper, ground allspice, ground cinnamon, bay leaves, hot sauce, and red pepper. Mix well.
  4. Cook, uncovered, over low heat for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove bay leaves before serving.

Tips & Substitutions

For a deeper flavor, consider adding a splash of beer or broth along with the tomato juice. If you prefer a milder chili, reduce the amount of chili powder and omit the hot sauce. You can also substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option. Fresh herbs, like cilantro or parsley, can elevate the dish's presentation and taste.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this hearty chili with a side of cornbread or over a bed of rice for a satisfying meal. It pairs beautifully with Tamale Corn Bread Pie for a festive touch. Garnish with shredded cheese, diced onions, or a dollop of sour cream to enhance the flavors.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To reheat, place the chili in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through. Alternatively, you can microwave it in a microwave-safe dish, covering it loosely to prevent splatters.
