Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/3 cup currants
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Grease a baking sheet.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. Cut in the butter or margarine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Stir in chopped pecans and currants.
  6. Add eggs and enough buttermilk or sour milk to make a soft dough.
  7. Knead on a floured surface until smooth, about 1 minute.
  8. Shape into a ball and place on the greased baking sheet.
  9. Flatten to a 6-inch diameter.
  10. Cut a deep 'X' into the top of the loaf.
  11. Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes.
  12. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
