Ingredients

  • 3 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1/8 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground anise seed
  • 1 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • Grated rind of 1 orange
  • 1/2 c. butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. light molasses
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • Confectioners sugar
  • 1/2 c. light molasses

Instructions

  1. Sift together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ground anise seed, ground cloves, and nutmeg.
  2. Stir in grated orange rind and chopped nuts.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs and light molasses until well combined.
  5. Gradually stir the egg mixture into the dry ingredients to form a smooth dough.
  6. Roll the dough into walnut-sized balls and place them on a baking sheet.
  7. Bake in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and roll in confectioners sugar while still warm.
