Tips & Substitutions

For added flavor, consider using smoked sausage instead of cottage ham or pork steak. You can also experiment with different types of beans based on your preference; black beans or garbanzo beans could be great additions. If you prefer a vegetarian version, simply omit the meat and enhance the flavor with vegetable broth and spices. This soup is versatile and can be easily adjusted to suit your taste.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this hearty soup with a side of crusty bread or cornbread for a complete meal. It pairs beautifully with Ham Crescent Rolls for a satisfying dinner. For a fresh touch, consider adding a side salad or some pickled vegetables to balance the richness of the soup. You can also serve it with a dollop of sour cream or a sprinkle of cheese on top.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will continue to develop, making it even tastier the next day. To reheat, simply transfer to a pot over medium heat, adding a splash of water if needed to loosen it up. Stir occasionally until heated through.
