Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • approximately 1 1/2 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Beat the egg slightly in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add sugar and melted butter to the beaten egg and mix well.
  3. Sift together the flour, salt, soda, and cream of tartar in a separate bowl.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk, until a soft dough forms.
  5. Heat hot fat to 350°F in a deep fryer or heavy pan.
  6. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness, cut into circles, and twist into figure eights.
  7. Fry the doughnuts in hot fat until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Remove from fat and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with maple syrup or your favorite toppings.
