Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 7 unbeaten egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup egg whites
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • Fluffy White Frosting
  • 3 milk chocolate bars (1 oz. each)

Instructions

  1. Combine boiling water and cocoa; cool.
  2. Sift cake flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt into a bowl.
  3. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add vegetable oil, egg yolks, vanilla, and cooled cocoa mixture.
  4. Beat until smooth with a spoon.
  5. Measure egg whites and cream of tartar into a large mixing bowl and beat until very stiff.
  6. Pour the egg yolk mixture in a thin stream over the beaten egg whites, gently cutting and folding in with a rubber spatula until completely blended.
  7. Pour into an ungreased 10-inch tube pan.
  8. Bake for 55 minutes at 325°F, then increase oven temperature to 350°F and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes or until the cake tests done.
  9. Let the cake hang over the bottle neck until cold.
  10. Ice with Fluffy White Frosting and decorate with broken milk chocolate bars.
