Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup butter or shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup sour milk
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 cup seedless raisins or currants
  • 1/2 cup nutmeats, coarsely broken

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour once; measure the amount.
  2. Add baking soda, salt, and spices to the flour and sift together three times.
  3. Work the butter with a spoon until creamy.
  4. Gradually add sugar and cream until light and fluffy.
  5. Add the egg and beat well.
  6. Alternately add the flour mixture and the combined milk and molasses, a small amount at a time, beating until smooth after each addition.
  7. Stir in the raisins and coarsely broken nutmeats.
  8. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet.
  9. Bake in a hot oven at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 12 minutes.
