Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 egg
  • milk

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in butter and shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add raisins to the mixture and stir to combine.
  4. Beat the egg in an 8-ounce measuring cup.
  5. Add enough milk to the beaten egg to make one cup of liquid.
  6. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a soft dough forms.
  7. Divide the dough in half.
  8. Place each half on a lightly floured surface.
  9. Pat out each piece into a 1-inch thick circle.
  10. Cut each circle into 6 wedges or triangles and place on a baking sheet.
  11. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Let cool slightly before serving. These freeze well and can be microwaved briefly to taste fresh.
