Ingredients

  • 2 lb. cubed round steak
  • 1 can consomme
  • 1 can mushroom soup
  • 1 can water
  • 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 4 c. sliced celery
  • 1 can sliced mushrooms
  • 1 large can bean sprouts or mixed Chinese vegetables

Instructions

  1. Toss the cubed round steak in a nonstick pan or in a small amount of fat until it browns.
  2. Add the consomme, mushroom soup, water, and soy sauce. Cook the meat on low heat or in a 325°F oven until almost tender, about 30 minutes.
  3. Add sliced celery and cover. Cook gently for 30 minutes or until the celery is tender.
  4. Blend flour and water to make a slurry; add to the skillet to thicken the sauce.
  5. Heat until boiling and cook until thickened.
  6. Add drained bean sprouts and sliced mushrooms. Heat through.
  7. Serve on rice or crisp noodles.

Tips & Substitutions

For enhanced flavor, consider marinating the cubed round steak in soy sauce and garlic for a few hours before cooking. You can substitute the round steak with chicken or tofu for a different protein option. If you prefer a thicker sauce, add more flour to your slurry until the desired consistency is achieved. For a quicker dish, use pre-cut stir-fry vegetables instead of fresh celery.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Round Steak Chop Suey over a bed of Betty'S Chinese Rice for a complete meal. It also pairs well with a side of Stir-Fry Vegetables And Rice for added texture and flavor. For a lighter option, consider serving it on crisp noodles or with a fresh side salad for a balanced meal.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm it in a skillet over medium heat, adding a splash of water to maintain moisture, or microwave it in short intervals, stirring occasionally until heated through.
