- Cut the round steak into 1-inch squares.
- Brown the meat in 1 tablespoon hot shortening.
- Remove the browned meat from the skillet.
- Add the brown gravy mix and 2 cups water to the skillet.
- Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
- Stir in the minced onion, brown sugar, wine vinegar, bay leaf, ground ginger, salt, and pepper.
- Add the meat back into the skillet and transfer to a 1 1/2-quart casserole.
- Cover and bake at 350°F for 1 1/2 hours.
- Remove the bay leaf before serving.
- Serve the sauerbraten over hot buttered noodles.
