Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. round steak
  • 1 envelope brown gravy mix
  • 1 Tbsp. minced onion
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. wine vinegar
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
  • hot buttered noodles

Instructions

  1. Cut the round steak into 1-inch squares.
  2. Brown the meat in 1 tablespoon hot shortening.
  3. Remove the browned meat from the skillet.
  4. Add the brown gravy mix and 2 cups water to the skillet.
  5. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  6. Stir in the minced onion, brown sugar, wine vinegar, bay leaf, ground ginger, salt, and pepper.
  7. Add the meat back into the skillet and transfer to a 1 1/2-quart casserole.
  8. Cover and bake at 350°F for 1 1/2 hours.
  9. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
  10. Serve the sauerbraten over hot buttered noodles.
