- Mix ground beef, ground pork, chopped ham, raw rice, eggs, chopped onions, salt, and pepper well.
- Form the mixture into small meatballs.
- Wrap each meatball in cabbage leaves that have been in salted boiling water for 1 to 2 days.
- Brown flour in ham or bacon fat to make a roux.
- Mix in 1 can of tomato puree and cook briefly.
- Add one can of sauerkraut to the tomato mixture and simmer.
- Gently place the meatballs into the sauce.
- Add another can of sauerkraut and some water if needed.
- Cover and cook slowly for 3 to 3 1/2 hours until tender.
