Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup currants
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon lemon rind
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Boil water, sugar, shortening, raisins, currants, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg until the fruit is soft and the shortening has melted.
  2. Cool the mixture to lukewarm.
  3. Add flour, lemon rind, lemon juice, and baking soda; mix thoroughly.
  4. Pour into a well-greased and floured loaf pan.
  5. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 1 hour.
