Ingredients

  • 1 large round loaf French or Italian bread
  • 1 tsp hot pepper sauce
  • 2 pkg (8 oz each) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cans chopped clams, drained
  • 1/4 cup clam liquid (reserved)
  • 2 Tbsp grated onion
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Cut the top from the bread loaf with a sharp knife and set aside.
  2. Hollow out the loaf, leaving a 1 1/2 to 2-inch thick shell.
  3. Cut the removed bread into cubes and set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
  5. Stir in the drained chopped clams, reserved clam liquid, grated onion, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot pepper sauce, and salt until well blended.
  6. On a baking sheet, make a cross with two sheets of aluminum foil, each long enough to cover the loaf.
  7. Pour the clam mixture into the bread shell.
  8. Cover with the top of the bread loaf.
  9. Bake at 250°F (120°C) for 3 hours and then wrap in foil.
  10. Serve with cut-up vegetables for dipping and bread cubes.
