Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup soft shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1/2 cup hot water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix the shortening, sugar, egg, and molasses until well combined. Stir in the baking soda dissolved in hot water.
  2. Sift together the flour, salt, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon.
  3. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a dough forms.
  4. Chill the dough thoroughly.
  5. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Drop rounded teaspoons of dough onto a greased cookie sheet.
  6. Bake for 5 to 6 minutes until lightly golden.
  7. Cool the cookies on the sheet before transferring to a wire rack.
