Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • sorghum
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 6 tablespoons cold water
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1/2 cup raisins or chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Sift together flour, ginger, and salt.
  3. Dissolve baking soda in hot water.
  4. Mix shortening, sugar, sorghum, and egg until creamy.
  5. Add the dissolved soda and most of the raisins or nuts, mixing well.
  6. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough onto greased cookie sheets.
  7. Sprinkle remaining raisins or nuts on top of cookies.
  8. Bake for 12 minutes or until done.
