Tips & Substitutions

For a vegetarian option, substitute the hamburger with crumbled tempeh or additional cooked soybeans for added protein. If you're short on time, canned soybeans can be used instead of cooked. You can also add spices like garlic or paprika to enhance the flavor. Consider using low-sodium tomato soup for a healthier version.

Serving Suggestions

Serve hot, garnished with grated cheese on top. This casserole pairs beautifully with a side of Mom's French Green Beans for a complete meal. A fresh green salad or crusty bread also makes excellent accompaniments, providing a nice contrast to the hearty casserole.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, place in a microwave-safe dish and heat until warmed through, or re-bake in the oven at 350°F until heated thoroughly. This dish also freezes well; thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this casserole ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the casserole up to the baking stage, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, allow it to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before placing it in the oven to ensure even cooking.

What can I substitute for the beef bouillon cube?

If you prefer a vegetarian version, use vegetable bouillon or simply omit the bouillon cube. You can enhance the flavor with a splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce, which adds depth without using meat products.

Can I add other vegetables to the casserole?

Absolutely! Feel free to incorporate your favorite vegetables such as mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach. Just be sure to chop them finely and sauté them along with the other vegetables to ensure they cook evenly.
