- Whip butter and margarine until smooth.
- Add egg yolks and whip. Add powdered sugar and whip.
- Whip egg whites until stiff in another bowl.
- Add flour to the mixture and fold in whipped whites just until combined.
- Divide the batter, placing more than half in another bowl to remain white.
- Add spices to the smaller half of the batter.
- Grease and flour 2 round pans.
- Spread 2 tablespoons of brown spiced batter in a pan and bake at 250°F (120°C) for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Immediately spread 1 to 2 tablespoons of white batter and broil with door open until light brown.
- Continue alternating layers of colored batter, broiling and spreading immediately each time.
- If unable to alternate between pans, do one pan at a time.
- Cool the cakes on a rack.
- Slice off the edges of the cake.
- Wrap in foil and store.
- Cut into wedges to serve.
