Ingredients

  • 2 c. Gold Medal flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 c. sour cream
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 2 egg whites

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch or 9-inch layer pans, or one 9x13-inch pan.
  2. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg thoroughly.
  3. Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Alternately add dry ingredients and sour cream to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  6. Stir in raisins and nuts.
  7. Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry.
  8. Fold egg whites into the batter gently.
  9. Spoon batter into prepared pans.
  10. Bake for about 37 to 40 minutes for layers or 30 minutes for 9-inch layers, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Cool in pans for a few minutes, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.
  12. Frost with your desired frosting before serving.
