- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch or 9-inch layer pans, or one 9x13-inch pan.
- Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg thoroughly.
- Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Alternately add dry ingredients and sour cream to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
- Stir in raisins and nuts.
- Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry.
- Fold egg whites into the batter gently.
- Spoon batter into prepared pans.
- Bake for about 37 to 40 minutes for layers or 30 minutes for 9-inch layers, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool in pans for a few minutes, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.
- Frost with your desired frosting before serving.
