- Cream the butter until smooth and fluffy.
- Gradually add sugar and mix well.
- Add molasses and the unbeaten egg, blending thoroughly.
- In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, soda, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing thoroughly.
- Divide the dough into portions and roll out on a floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness, 1/4 at a time.
- Chill the dough if necessary for easier handling.
- Cut into shapes with cookie cutters and place on lightly greased cookie sheets.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 8 minutes until golden.
