Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 cup sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter

Instructions

  1. Combine 1/4 cup milk, sugar, salt, and 3 tablespoons butter in a saucepan.
  2. Heat until butter melts and mixture is warm (105° to 115°F).
  3. Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Let stand 5 minutes to activate the yeast.
  5. Stir in the milk mixture, 1 1/2 cups flour, and egg.
  6. Beat at medium speed of an electric mixer until smooth.
  7. Stir in remaining 3/4 cup flour.
  8. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic (about 8 minutes).
  9. Place dough in a well-greased bowl, turning to grease top, then cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  10. Punch dough down and turn out onto a lightly floured surface.
  11. Roll dough into a 12 x 8-inch rectangle.
  12. Spread with 2 tablespoons softened butter.
  13. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the rectangle.
  14. Sprinkle with raisins, if desired.
  15. Roll dough jelly roll fashion starting at the long side, pinch seam to seal, but do not seal ends.
  16. Cut roll into 1-inch slices and place, cut side down, in a greased 8-inch square pan.
  17. Brush tops with 1 tablespoon melted butter.
  18. Gently lift the center of each roll with a fork to form a peak.
  19. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 40 minutes.
  20. Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes.
  21. Combine 1 cup powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons milk, stirring well.
  22. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls before serving.
