Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark molasses
  • 1 tsp. lemon flavoring
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda

Instructions

  1. Cream butter, sugar, and molasses together.
  2. Add lemon flavoring to the buttermilk.
  3. Sift together flour, salt, spices, and baking soda.
  4. Add alternately with the buttermilk to the creamed mixture, mixing well.
  5. Chill the dough for several hours.
  6. Turn out onto a floured board and roll to 1/4-inch thickness.
  7. Cut into 1 1/2 x 2-inch strips.
  8. Place on greased baking sheets and bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
