Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
  • pastry for 2-crust pie
  • 4 cups apples, peeled, cored and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
  • 7/8 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and add brown sugar; beat to combine.
  2. Spread butter-sugar mixture in the bottom of a 10-inch pan.
  3. Sprinkle chopped walnuts over the butter-sugar mixture.
  4. Divide pie pastry in half; roll each half to 1/8-inch thickness.
  5. Carefully line the prepared pie pan with dough so as not to make holes in the dough with nuts. Trim even with the edge of the pan.
  6. Fill the pan with cubed apples.
  7. Combine granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; blend thoroughly; sprinkle evenly over apples.
  8. Place the top crust on the pie and trim even with the edge of the pan.
  9. Prick the top crust with tines of a fork. Seal the crust edges and roll the edges toward the center of the pie.
  10. Ensure no crust touches the rim of the pan.
  11. Bake at 375°F for 50 to 55 minutes.
  12. Remove from the oven; sugar may bubble out. Carefully run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the pie; invert onto a serving plate.
  13. Let stand for 2 minutes.
  14. Remove the pan.
  15. Serve warm with whipped cream.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using a mix of sweet and tart apples, such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. If walnuts aren't available, pecans can be a great substitute. To prevent a soggy crust, make sure to press the apples down firmly to release excess moisture before adding the sugar mixture. For an added twist, try incorporating a splash of vanilla extract into the apple filling.

Serving Suggestions

This pie is best served warm, topped with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat. It pairs beautifully with Butch'S Chess Cake for a delightful dessert spread. Consider serving alongside a light salad or a warm beverage like spiced cider to complement the flavors.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover pie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place slices in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes until warmed through. You can also microwave individual slices for about 20-30 seconds, but the crust may not stay as crisp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen apples for this pie?

While fresh apples are recommended for the best texture and flavor, you can use frozen apples if needed. Just ensure they are fully thawed and drained of excess moisture before using them in the recipe to avoid a soggy pie.

How do I know when the pie is done baking?

The pie is done when the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly. A toothpick inserted through the crust should come out clean. Keep an eye on it during the last few minutes of baking to prevent over-browning.

Can I make this pie ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the pie ahead of time and refrigerate it unbaked for up to 24 hours. Allow it to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before baking. Alternatively, you can bake it in advance and reheat as needed for serving.
