Ingredients

  • 1 cup margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 box dates
  • 1 cup nuts
  • 1 pound orange slices
  • 3 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 cup orange juice

Instructions

  1. Cream the margarine and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. Stir in the soda and buttermilk until combined.
  4. Gradually add the flour, mixing until just incorporated.
  5. Chop the dates, nuts, and orange slices; toss them in a little flour to prevent sinking.
  6. Fold the chopped dates, nuts, and orange slices into the batter.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  8. Bake at 250°F (120°C) for approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Mix the orange juice and sugar to make the glaze.
  10. Pour the glaze over the hot cake and let it stand overnight to absorb the flavors.
