Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine half of the flour, brown sugar, shortening, molasses, egg, baking soda, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves in a mixing bowl.
  2. Beat with an electric mixer until thoroughly combined.
  3. Beat in the remaining flour.
  4. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and then roll each ball in the sugar.
  5. Place the dough balls 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 8 to 10 minutes until tops are set and crackled.
