Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Mix applesauce and brown sugar together in a bowl.
  2. Add the well-beaten egg to the mixture.
  3. Stir in molasses until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing well.
  6. Pour hot water into the batter and stir until smooth.
  7. Pour the batter into an 8 x 8-inch pan.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 minutes.
