Swedish Pepperkakor are traditional spiced cookies with warm cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and cardamom, perfect for holiday gatherings or a cozy treat with a cup of tea.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 tablespoons dark syrup
  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together.
  2. Add the beaten egg and dark syrup, mixing well.
  3. Sift the flour with the soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and cardamom, then add to the mixture and combine.
  4. Refrigerate the dough overnight.
  5. Roll the dough very thin, cut into shapes, and bake at 375°F for 10 to 15 minutes.
